Outlander Review

Outlander is not the best movie of 2009, but it wasn't the worst either.

Outlander is not the best movie of 2009, but it wasn't the worst either.

Outlander has to be one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a long time. With the exception of Brides Wars, Outlander sports substandard acting, terrible sets and props, laughable and unrealistic concepts, stolen ideas from other popular stories or movies, and a slew of other bad ideas, period. Ironically, I liked it! I didn’t love it. There was hardly anything in this film to love, unless you are really into movies that the whole plot revolves around slashing monsters in ancient times.

Outlander is one of those movies that you not only have to check the brain at the door, but you should probably leave it there for a few weeks so that you avoid trying to make sense of what you saw. I’ve said it before. I’m willing to suspend reality for films, but to a certain extent. I am willing to buy that an alien ship crash landed on this planet hundreds of years ago in the Iron age. However, I refuse to believe that people of that time could forge a metal they have never seen before with the technology they had and were able to make several weapons in an afternoon. That is just ridiculous.

What the film did have was tons of charisma. This movie was a combination of Braveheart, Aliens and Beowulf. It reminded me of a children’s story, but geared to adults because of the language and the gore. However, with all the wrongs in this movie, there are a few things that it had going for it. As dumb as some of the ideas were in this movie the plot is very interesting, the acting wasn’t half bad, the graphics were mildly impressive and the dialog wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. I want to give this movie 2.5 stars out of 5, but Netflix won’t let me do halves. It doesn’t deserve 3 stars though, so 2 it is.

Should you watch this movie? Unless you lived in Newfoundland where it was filmed, really loved Beowulf, or you like highlander type movies then you could easily skip this film. However, if you enjoy films like these, this isn’t that bad of a flick.
